Lee Friedlander – Sticks & Stones: Architectural America
In Sticks & Stones, published by Fraenkel Gallery, Lee Friedlander offers his view of America as seen through its architecture. In numerous square-format pictures, Friedlander has framed the familiar through his own unique way of seeing the world. Sometimes whimsical, always interesting, Friedlander plays with perspective and geometric lines and shapes in the landscape, which in some cases create abstract images that make the viewer question what they are looking at. Throughout the book, numerous images are juxtaposed to highlight common architectural features in often disparate landscapes. Shot during the course of countless trips to urban and rural areas across the country, many of them made by car, these pictures capture an America as unblemished by romanticized notions of human nature as it is full of quirky human touches.
